The Supreme Court of India has recently given a new direction on old vehicles, especially in and around Delhi-NCR. Earlier rules said that diesel cars older than 10 years and petrol cars older than 15 years shouldn’t be allowed to run on the roads to fight air pollution. Many people worried that their vehicles would be seized or scrapped just because of their age. In August, the Court said that authorities should not take harsh action against owners of these older petrol and diesel vehicles for the time being. This meant that cars would not be forcibly taken away or penalized simply because they had crossed an age limit. The idea was to give relief to vehicle owners and reconsider the rule, especially since many older cars may still be in good condition and not necessarily dirty or polluting. Recently, the Supreme Court clarified that this protection from action applies mainly to vehicles that meet certain emission standards (BS-IV or better). So cars that are old but still compliant with modern pollution rules will not face punishment just for their age. Meanwhile, very old vehicles that do not meet those emission standards could still be subject to enforcement as authorities work to improve air quality. Overall, the Court’s move is seen as shifting focus away from punishing vehicles solely because of how old they are, and more toward looking at actual pollution levels and fitness of the vehicles. This has given many people hope that cars which are low on pollution and well maintained can continue to be used even after they get older.
