Pent-up energy finally exploding into pure rock and roll! Play it loud! The Beatles were not only legendary songwriters and performers of their own material, but also one of the greatest cover bands of their time. That side of them shines through in their version of Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music.” The song was part of their DNA from the very beginning, becoming one of their longest-lasting covers, performed live from 1960 all the way through 1966. The studio recording you hear here is essentially live, captured in a single take at EMI Studios on October 18, 1964. My remix set out to unlock some of the raw ingredients that were held back by the mixing practices of that era and re-shape them into something more exciting and fun. To achieve this, I drew on mixing approaches that became more common just a few years later. Step one: bring the kick drum to the center where it belongs, locking it tightly with Paul’s bass (also centered). This Ringo–Paul combination is pure magic and deserves to be heard properly. Placing them in the middle creates a center of gravity, giving the whole mix more balance and space. In contrast, the original 1964 mix pushed the less prominent bass and drums off to the far left channel. Step two: widen the separation between guitars and piano (played by their producer George Martin). The original mix had the piano in the center (where it competed with John’s vocal frequencies) and the guitars confined to the right channel. In my 2025 remix, the piano now sits mostly to the right, while the guitars move to the left. This opens up the mix, giving Paul’s bass, Ringo’s drums, and John’s vocal plenty of breathing room. It’s the kind of arrangement often used in the late ’60s, and I believe if The Beatles had recorded this song just a few years later, they would have chosen a similar approach. Listen closely and you’ll hear just how powerful The Beatles sounded live — no overdubs, just a magnificent one-take performance. It’s a glimpse of the raw energy that made them so popular at Liverpool’s Cavern Club and the clubs of Hamburg. I hope this 2025 remix brings you that same energy, excitement, and fun. Thank you for listening!
