Hengjiang Ancient Town, located in Xuzhou District of Ybin City, sits at the border of Sichuan and Yunnan. Since ancient times, it has been a vital node and trade hub on the Southern Silk Road. Its history dates back to the Eastern Han Dynasty, over a thousand years ago, and thanks to its strategic location, it has been called the “Throat of Sichuan and Yunnan.” Unlike Lizhuang—a more popular ancient town in Yibin—Hengjiang receives very few tourists. Even those who visit seldom stay overnight. Although the town has been refurbished, it retains an authentic, local feel, with most businesses catering to residents rather than visitors. Hengjiang still holds the natural charm of a riverside mountain town. It nestles against slopes facing the Hengjiang River, with open views across the water into Yunnan. The river churns through a wide channel, flowing vigorously into the distance. At the edge of town, a railway line runs close to old houses, creating a striking scene as trains pass by centuries-old buildings. The streets cling to the hillside, lined with traditional Southern Sichuan-style houses rising tier after tier. On misty mornings, winding cobblestone lanes glisten with light rain, full of poetic atmosphere. Locals carry bamboo baskets through the damp air, heading to the market to buy and sell vegetables. As the Spring Festival approaches, the town grows even livelier. Families crowd the butcher shops to buy meat for making sausages—preparing for the festive season. One can only imagine how warmly this celebration will be welcomed here.
