For this episode we highlight the most important guitar pioneers of the 1930s and 1940s - players whose contributions shaped the instrument before rock guitar even existed. Ranking takes into account not only musicological attributes like technique and improvisation, but also intangible factors such as originality, influence, and commercial impact. This video is part of “The Road to 100 Greatest Guitarists”, an ongoing research-driven project that recalibrates all-time guitar rankings through musical substance, not popularity or empty virtuosity. We look at guitarists not just for technique, but for composition, innovation, and cultural weight - tracing how the instrument evolved decade by decade. We hope you enjoy the journey - let us know your thoughts (and your rankings!) in the comments. Big thanks to my research team: George Afroudakis, Nikos Gkenes (@fabricadarteofficial) & Marios Karakatsanis. Narration by Monica van Luven.
