Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis or AIS is the most common given diagnosis of scoliosis. To better understand, we must first know what scoliosis is. Scoliosis is an unnatural, sideways curvature of the spine, measuring 10 degrees or more in its Cobb Angle. It is progressive as a condition and affects the structure of the spine. When scoliosis is not treated, it will likely become larger, so the smaller the curve when treatment is started, the better results will show. Types of Scoliosis: Idiopathic - No specific known cause; 80% of all cases diagnosed are idiopathic. Neuromuscular - the patient has an existing neuromuscular condition that explains their scoliosis. Congenital - A hemivertebra or malformation of the bones in the spine. Degenerative - A misalignment causes the spine to deteriorate over time. Traumatic - An accident or trauma causes the misalignment of the spine. The most common one is idiopathic, and it is often diagnosed in the adolescent stage of life. That is where AIS originates. The patients get diagnosed between the ages of 10-18. Regardless of the patient's age at the time of diagnosis, it is not a guarantee that their scoliosis existed before this time or will continue to exist once the patient is an adult. Some unique aspects of AIS are: -The cause is unknown -It can not be cured -It can be treated Despite the unknown nature of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, we can still treat it and obtain great results. As long as the structural alignment problem of the spine is addressed, scoliosis can be managed enough, so adolescents get through this rapid growth stage with minimal progression and other scoliosis-related problems. In adolescents, scoliosis is triggered due to growth. This allows curves to progress quickly for the duration of the growth phase, putting adolescents at high risk for rapid scoliosis progression. Most adolescent patients grow cyclically, not linearly, so their scoliosis progression will match their growth pattern. There is no way to predict how large their scoliosis will be when their growth phase is over, but as long as their curve progresses, their risk of further progression will be directly related Click the link for a scoliosis consultation: https://www.scoliosisreductioncenter....
