China issues new banknotes and coins

The new notes have sharper colours and are better protected against counterfeiting but will have similar designs – former Chinese leader Mao Zedong’s portrait remains the main image. When tilting the banknotes the colour of the value number will change due to colour-changing ink. Only the 50, 20, 10 and 1 yuan notes will get an update – the 100 yuan bill remains unchanged. Coins will see the biggest changes. Smaller one yuan coins are designed to be more portable, while the colour of a five jiao (0.5 yuan) coin changes from gold to silver. The new banknotes and coins will be circulated in parallel with previous editions with the same face value.
