The SES has concluded its five-week program, a desperate attempt to tackle the persistent problem of volunteer management and retention. Despite the efforts in recruitment training, the ongoing struggle for volunteer engagement remains. This initiative, while completed, barely scratches the surface of what's truly needed for community volunteering in emergency management. Cairns SES has transformed volunteer recruitment. After COVID, SES membership across Queensland dropped but in Far North Queensland, a bold new recruitment and retention program changed everything. The Cairns region has gone from decline to leading the state in growth, with more members joining than anywhere else in Queensland.
