For this month, Ted builds a beautiful chord melody on another Gershwin classic, throwing in a variety of turnarounds. Video Credits: Cesar Pineda 12/18/96 Part 1 takes us from the head of the song into the bridge before ending 33 minutes later. Part 2, will post next month to continue with the rest of the song. Sorry about the video camera not pointed on Ted’s hands at the beginning. Unknown to Cesar, Ted had moved his position, so it is not corrected until 10:47, so be patient and use your ears until then (sometimes you can see his hands partially at the bottom of the screen). Cesar starts this lesson with own ‘rough draft’ of this tune in the key of A. This was only after taking one previous lesson with Ted! Man, I wish I could hear that audio tape from his 1st lesson! He then seeks assistance from Ted to complete the tune at the turnaround. Here’s a brief summary: 1. The turnaround is |C#7 | F#7 | B9 | E13 | keeping the common tone in the soprano. 2. Then at 10:47, when the camera centers on Ted’s hands, he reviews and then adds a variety of turnarounds with different notes on top with | III | VI | II | V | with explanation. 3. Play it this way! A focus on easier ‘sloppy’ fingering to grab the chords faster (12:26). 4. A contrary line with the melody on the second time through the A section (13:10). 5. Ted asks Cesar to start again at the Dm6/9 chord, which introduces the small section right before the bridge. 6. Don’t forget to position the right hand to coax the sweet tones over the neck! 7. Use Dom. 7 chords rather than major chords leading up to the bridge (it lends itself to the counterpoint). 8. Starting the bridge: D Lydian with an added E note … with some awkward fingering. 9. The beauty of a floating, stationary bass between chord changes (27:49). 10. Go to the diminish chord with a major 7, then to ii to A11. Well …if you study/play this song for 25 years, like Ted has, marveling at all the chords and their inversions each year, along with finding the ‘sweet spot’ for every chord and where to pluck them, then no doubt, the magic will happen! Lol! We have almost come full circle! This was Cesar’s very first video taped guitar lesson with Ted, which I saved for last. Come August, when part 2 is posted, this will mark our one-year anniversary and the conclusion of posting Cesar Pineda’s video guitar lessons with Ted that he has so graciously shared with us.
