Alleluja 13:19 While Mozart was staying in Milan for the production of his opera Lucio Silla, which was being performed there in the Teatro Regio Ducale, he composed this devotional solo motet. Written for castrato Venanzio Rauzzini, who had performed the role of Cecilio in Lucio Silla the year before as the primo uomo. Mozart wrote the motet for his singer, whose technical prowess he respected, while anticipating the end of the run (from 26 December 1772 to 25 January 1773). On January 17, 1773, when Rauzzini was still singing in Mozart's opera at night, it had its debut at the Theatine Church. Around 1780, Mozart made some alterations. A reworked version was sung by Francesco Ceccarelli in the Holy Trinity Church in Salzburg on May 30, a Trinity Sunday. For Christmas, a new version was intended. 1978 saw the discovery of the two Salzburg versions' manuscripts in St. Jakob, Wasserburg am Inn. The motet is typically sung by a female soprano in modern times.
