Premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 2000, Domitila is an Ibero-American chamber opera composed by Brazilian João Guilherme Ripper (1959). The libretto is inspired by a true story that took place in the 1820s: the impossible relationship between King Pedro I of Brazil and the Marquise Domitila de Castro. The yoke they both bear is represented trapped between strings, as if they were a single character with different appearances who struggles with herself to find balance in the midst of the ties that constrain her existence.
