Today, we’re talking about the Red Custard Apple, specifically the San Pablo variety. Red Custard Apple (Annona reticulata var. San Pablo) belongs to the Annonaceae family, which includes close relatives like cherimoya, sugar apple, guanabana (soursop), and the North American native pawpaw (Asimina triloba). While it’s not as common or popular as some of its relatives, possibly due to the variable quality of the fruit by cultivar, the San Pablo variety is an exception. You can grow Red Custard Apple from seed, and it will come close to the original tree. However, to ensure you're getting the exact same fruit, it's best to purchase a grafted tree. Two popular varieties of Red Custard Apple that I particularly enjoy are San Pablo and Fernandez. Both varieties, along with the fruit when in season, are available from https://larafarmsmiami.com/ The San Pablo cultivar is exceptional! It features pink flesh and has the soft, creamy texture of cherimoya, with a unique taste and fragrance that reminds me of raspberry cheesecake. I'm excited to see more tropical fruit growers recognizing the potential of this delicious and unique fruit.
