When replacement inner cannulas are not available, you will need to clean the inner cannula that you have, and continue to use it. This is not the ideal way to care for a trach, but without the proper supplies, exceptions have to be made to ensure patient safety. This video will explain the process of removing, cleaning, and putting the inner cannula back in place. It will also cover the other required trach care that should be done at this time, including assessment and cleaning of the tracheostomy, and replacing the split gauze.
