First, we will review what a meter is and how a meter relates to a kilometer. The prefix kilo means thousand, so 1 kilometer equals 1000 meters. Next we review the prefix centi, which means 1/100. This means that there are 100 centimeters in a single meter. Finally, we review the prefix milli, which means 1/1000. This means that there are 1000 millimeters in a single meter. With this information, we can now begin to convert between units by setting up a unit conversion table. This is a powerful technique and in fact using unit conversions can be used to solve a great variety of problems in more advanced classes such as physics, chemistry, and engineering. We will convert between metric units and get practice by solving problems.
