Shivaratri Expressions:Aarthy Sundar presents Shambo Natanam choreographed by Smt.Rama Vaidyanathan Today she presents: Shambo Natanam, Adi Thaalam, choreographed by Smt. Rama Vaidhyanathan. This piece is adapted from the Nataraja Stotram composed by Sage Pathanjali, extoling the majesty of Lord Nataraja in Chidambaram. Aarthy Sundar has trained in the classical dance form, bharathanatyam, for the past 15 years, and has given numerous solo and group performances throughout many cities in the US, as well as in Delhi, Coorg, and Chennai, India. She performed her arangetram under the able tutelage of Smt. Madhusri Sethuraman, completed advanced training from Dr. Janaki Rangarajan, and is currently under the mentorship of Smt. Apoorva Jayaraman. Over the years she has learned from many notable artists in the field, such as Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan, Sri CV Chandrashekar, and Smt. Shobana Balachandran. She has gained much recognition for her dancing over the years, being named the Saptami Star in the statewide Saptami Arts and Culture competition two years consecutively, and being selected twice as a dance finalist in the prestigious Cleveland Tyagaraja Aradhana Festival. In 2016, she was chosen as one of the first dance fellows for the selective IndianRaga Fellowship, and was invited back for a second year as a creative director of dance in 2017. Through this platform, she has conceptualized, choreographed and collaborated on multiple dance videos that have gained much traction through social media, and have been recognized by publications like HuffPost, Feminism In India, United Nations Free and Equal, and The Times Of India-Chennai. One of her most notable projects to date was Ekashree, a dance production she co-conceptualized and choreographed around the theme of women empowerment, where all ticket proceeds of the show were donated to a charity for abused women and children. In the last year, she was also commissioned by the charity organization Empower and Excel to conceptualize and choreograph a specialized traditional bharathantyam program on the themes of bringing awareness for children with special needs, as well as victims of human trafficking. That program, Art With a Heart, was hosted in 3 different cities, where Aarthy performed alongside world-renowned speed painter, Vilas Nayak. She continues today to seek opportunities to spread her passion for bharathanatyam use her love for dance as a platform for social awareness and change. She has a masters degree in communication disorders, and is a practicing speech-language pathologist.
