1) Traverse Timing Chains In Car Fix - GM 3.6

This video is Part 1 of a 3 part series on how to replace the timing chains on the infamous GM High Feature 3.6 V6 with the engine in the car. I was very reluctant to attempt this repair with the engine in the car but the logistics of removing this engine from the bottom or front of the car was just not feasible so I took the plunge. As it turned out, it wasn’t that hard to do. This particular vehicle is a 2011 Chevy Traverse with transverse mounted engine. A local shop quoted $3000 to do this repair. I did it for about $700 in parts and 15 hours of my labor. If I had not been recording and had videos like this, I probably could have done it in 10 hours. While there are numerous videos that show how to install the chains, that’s actually the easy part. I think my videos are better because I show every step to get access to the chains. This is Part 1 but you should start watching at Part 3 before watching Part 1. The reason is I did the reverse work in Part 3 months ago when I didn’t intend to video the work, but stopped when I was undecided about pulling the entire engine out of the car. I was going to use a lift that I had access to but decided to do the work in the car when I realized I could help more people with videos on doing the work in the car. In my videos I reference videos from Cloyes and Melling because I watched both to do this job. Here are those videos:    • GM 2.8/3.0/3.2/3.6L Timing Chain Replaceme...      • Melling Timing Kit for GM 3.6L Installatio...   Since I used a Cloyes kit no. 90753S I did not follow the Melling video to the letter but the Melling video seems like it would be easier and faster. The Melling video shows the use of cam locking tools which I didn’t use. You don’t need the locking tools if you make sure to rotate the cams so that the flats are up like I show in my video. Also according to Melling you can do all the chains without rotating the engine back and forth from stage 2 timing marks to stage 1 timing marks and back to stage 2 marks. But it makes me wonder if they aren’t needed why are they there? If I had to do this job again I’d use Melling’s procedure no matter whose parts I used to save time.
