We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” 11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. This passage is not about government welfare standards. It’s about people causing problems in the church The Bible gives direction on what we are to think about. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Psalm 1 is right. The person who takes delight in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night, is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither, and whatever they do prospers. The capacity to be bored can be an antidote to boredom Being lazy is not about doing nothing; it is about being unproductive. Choosing idleness is the opposite of choosing intentionality, pointless vs. purposefulness. It’s not about every waking moment being spiritually minded, but it is about cultivating a spiritual attentiveness to God’s will. God is productive. We can’t endure peace and silence for long. We want complexity. Hope is not about abandoning the world; it is about setting it right Our digital devices can lead to productivity and meaning. Let God inform you what is profitable for your time and attention. Only in him will that deep hunger be satisfied How can your digital devices become trusted tools in knowing God and doing his will?
