The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai, who is campaigning in Coimbatore for the Lok Sabha elections, has spoken to the media in the recent days about the documents that he got through RTI to highlight how India ceded Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in 1974. Since then Katchatheevu is a much discussed topic in the State that is going to polls on April 19. In a chat with The Hindu recently in Coimbatore, he spoke in detail about why the Katchatheevu issue is important now especially in the coastal areas; why he applied for the documents through RTI, and the stand of the Tamil Nadu BJP on this issue. He said categorically that retrieval of Katchatheevu is the demand of Tamil Nadu BJP as it is the only way to resolve the problems faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen. He also said Mr. Karunanidhi, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, had not registered his protest strongly with the Central government on ceding Katchatheevu. Mr. Annamalai also shared his views on the demands of allies like the PMK for a caste census and internal reservation for Vanniyars. He says the immediate focus should be on who should be elected to form the next government and the broad contours of why they should be elected. Mr. Annamalai is also the BJP candidate in Coimbatore for the Lok Sabha elections, which is all set for a three-cornered contest. He shared in detail his views on Coimbatore’s developments in the recent years, what are its needs, what he can bring to Coimbatore, if elected, and how he plans to leverage Coimbatore’s strengths to propel the next wave of growth. He is confident of winning the elections, he says, because the people of Coimbatore want an elected representative who will represent the party that will form the next government and he will be a problem solver for the people of the constituency. He wants to create jobs, protect the environment, and rebuild the urban infrastructure in Coimbatore to give its residents a better quality of life. He also wants to stay connected with the youth and be part of their growth story. Read more: https://www.thehindu.com/elections/lo... Read more: https://www.thehindu.com/elections/lo... Reporting: M.
