From Oral Tradition to Hybrid Documentary Film: Hikayatussistance | Dongeng Sebelum Gulita (Tales Before Darkness), and the Voice of Acehnese Hikayat by Fuadi Klayu Every artist has their own way of whispering resistance. Fuadi Klayu chose the hikayat, a storytelling heritage that lives within the pulse of Acehnese culture. Since 2006, he has not only revived tales passed down through generations but also infused them with his own unease. It is a sense of unrest about a world that does not always take sides, a concern that resonates through the rhythm of his words. Muhammad Hendri is a filmmaker whose path follows both the shadows and the light of the screen. He is the founder of Aceh Menonton and first met Fuadi as a teenager. At the time, Hendri was exploring the world of film, searching for what could be expressed through images. From their encounter, one thing became clear. Art is not only about aesthetics, but also about struggle. Now, as part of his postgraduate thesis at ISI Yogyakarta, Hendri is delving deeper into the ideologies and meanings behind acts of resistance. Inspired by Rachel Landers’ hybrid documentary concept, which brings together reality and fiction, Hendri constructs a complex ideological relationship between himself and Fuadi in Hikayatussistance. A shared sense of unease connects them. They are individuals who understand that courage is not simply a choice, but a necessity. For this journey, Hendri appointed Muhammad Maulana as producer. Maulana, one of the founders of the Gerakan Surah Buku Indonesia, has been a long-time discussion partner since 2017 and a companion in exploring ideas. He is now pursuing postgraduate studies at the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS), Universitas Gadjah Mada, where he continues to carry his reflections into new academic arenas. In this hybrid documentary, Dongeng Sebelum Gulita (Tales Before Darkness) emerges as a murmur in the silence. This hikayat was born from Fuadi’s disquiet, shaped by his observations of politics, culture, and the social landscape of Indonesia, especially Aceh. Hendri captured these elements through the language of cinema, creating a visual exploration that not only tells stories but also embodies resistance. The words spoken by Fuadi do more than revive collective memory. They create space for the marginalized to speak. Hendri and Fuadi reached a shared understanding that this project is not just a film. It is neither entertainment nor mere documentation. It is a practice. It is a form of resistance that flickers through light and shadow, flowing between consciousness and unconsciousness. Hikayatussistance is not merely a film.
