Stop SEEKING GOD: The Hidden Belief That Blocks PEACE | Joel S. Goldsmith So much of spiritual life is spent “seeking”—seeking God in prayer, meditation, teachers, books, and experiences. But this message gently exposes a startling premise beneath all that searching: the assumption that God is absent—not in theory (we say God is everywhere), but in lived consciousness. If God were consciously present to us—fully present—there would be nothing left to seek. Yet the habit of seeking persists because it often begins in lack: we seek peace because we feel disturbed, healing because we feel broken, supply because we feel limited. Without realizing it, we can end up denying omnipresence with the very activity meant to honor it. Scripture asks, “Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit?” and answers: nowhere—because God is present in heaven and “in hell” alike. The question becomes unavoidable: where is God not? This teaching contrasts two modes of spiritual life. The “seeking consciousness” divides reality into here and there, now and later, human and divine—and once division is accepted, effort seems required: pray harder, study longer, purify more, reach further. But this only produces a more skilled seeker—never true rest. In the Infinite Way spirit, the invitation is not to become better at seeking, but to outgrow the premise that created the search. Jesus is presented here not as one who sought God, but as one who abided: “The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” Not will dwell if we pray enough—dwelleth (present, continuous). Prayer shifts from a “search party” for a distant deity into communion that flows from the recognition: God is. The door is not in heaven; the door is consciousness. “Be still and know” becomes the turning point—stillness isn’t something you do to get God; it’s what remains when the assumption of absence is surrendered. And then a powerful insight: seeking can carry a subtle violence—an insistence that this moment isn’t enough. That tension exhausts the soul. The alternative is not passivity; it is quiet confidence—the end of striving, the beginning of abiding, and the discovery that what you chased has been present all along.
