The Hughes AK-100 was introduced in the late 1980's as a sound enhancement device which, according to the hype, would enable you to "retrieve" the lost sound inherently disguised by poor recordings and bad stereo imaging. What it is, is basically a special effects box that allows you to adjust parameters of the stereo signal involving the levels of the "middle-side" ratio. The main controls are the Center and Space. The Center dial controls how much of the middle is added, and the Space dial adjusts the amount of side signals are added. It enables manipulation of the stereo field and sound stage. This is the only audio device designed and marketed by Hughes, the same company founded by Howard Hughes whose main manufacturing thrust was aircraft. There were some systems licensed to manufacturers which had buttons placed on TVs or sound systems that turned on the SRS. After a few years of notoriety, the system pretty much fell into obscurity. This particular unit has been mine from the beginning. I'm a sucker for effects boxes, the best one for sound staging being the Carver C-9 Sonic Hologram Generator. My video for the C-9 is here- • Sonic Hologram : Carver C-9
