#StripSessions #TripStation #Laraza LARAZA at Strip Sessions Welcome to the very first episode of Strip Sessions, the channel where we strip our guest bands to their bare minimum, and let them showcase their original songs. For our initial offering, we would like to present: Laraza! The band describes their music as influenced by Soul, Neo-Soul, R and B, but apart from this, each individual member brings in their personal musical influences that transforms the music into their own, unique sound. The quintet is composed of: drummer Jared Aquino, guitarist Jethro Martinez, keyboardist Teban Aquino, bassist Logbi Marvilla and vocalist, Jana Laraza. Looking at them as they performed in the studio, the lead singer definitely stands out as (cliché as it may sound) the rose among the thorns. Better yet, she looks like the precious sister being surrounded by her 4 protective siblings. Funny as my description may sound, her presence exudes quiet confidence that will surely command your attention even before she starts singing. The magic happens when the music starts. Among the three songs the band performed for us, I was particularly impressed by the song “Closure”, which reminded me of the kind of music that we would play with my first band, way, way back! In those days, I would like to think that we bit of more than our talents could chew, trying to perform songs from Incognito, and James Taylor Quartet. But, what this song reminded me about were songs from Workshy and D’sound, with a pinch of Frank Mccomb, and a dash of Snarky Puppy mixed in. You’ll be surprised by the deep, crisp voice that Jana projects, as it seems as it is not proportionate to her petite figure. The rest of the band compliments her voice with very tight instrumentals, that for me, the only word that comes to mind to describe their mesh is “pocket”. The beat put down by the drummer is laid back, but just enough to let all the other band members to nestle right in that small net that his strokes create. First in that pocket is the bass line that provides the shape that supports the whole song. The perfect sync between the drums and bass provides solid ground for the whole song to be built on. The keyboardist’s use, of what to my ears is the sound of Rhodes, reinforces the Soul, Neo-Soul description. It’s the keyboard sound used by such artists as: Tower of Power, Frank Mccomb, Joe Smple and some of our artists in Manila. You can hear this particular keyboard sound used by some of the contemporary musicians such as Mac Ayres, and Rai Thistlethwayte. The keyboard solo, played after the first chorus and just before the second set of stanzas, is subtle, short, and sweet. The whole sequence did not even fill up 4 bars, but it was quite satisfying to the ears. The slight out-of-time beat by the drummer paved the way for the sequence. The guitar lick that was played during these 4 bars lifted the solo to another level. For me, the guitar parts served to tie the whole net from the top. He was just there, making sure the sound was felt, and not overpowering. The guitar played a fine-drawn, yet important role in the whole song. On this whole double chocolate cake delight, his part was to drizzle the much needed sprinkles on top. A small part one would think, but what’s a cake without its sprinkles???? On top of this whole song is the singing, which brought life to the song’s message: I NEED CLOSURE! Jana’s delivery of this message is not by way of begging. No. It is more of wanting to settle things - to know what the future holds. Her tone of voice projects a woman who wants to iron out some details of her life. She wants to move forward, and is asking for clarification, and not permission. Laraza is a delight to the ears. Where some people may not appreciate Neo-Soul, as new ears can find it monotonous, this band succeeds in presenting the genre in a different way, by adding little tweaks, and their own flavor to the music. Laraza is definitely one band to watch out for. - November 8, 2019 | Ryan Everett Featured Songs: Closure First Love Forget the World Laraza's first single will be launched early 2020.
