The Seattle Streetcar maybe long gone but video lives forever! This footage was given to me recently by the wife of a deceased rail fan. He did a extraordinary job filming the entire route including some rare on board footage. I rode these cars countless times both for fun and to get to work and back. The ride was always a nice way to wind down after work. The Waterfront Streetcar line started in May of 1982 and closed in November of 2005. The route was 1.6 miles long and the cars operated year round. The W-2 class streetcars were built between 1925 and 1930 and were imported from Melbourne, Australia to Seattle. Despite high praise from the city, local residents, traveling tourist, and with over 1,000,000 riders per year. This much loved line was forever closed when a new sculpture park needed land the maintenance barn occupied. Three out of the original five cars was sold, and are currently in Saint Louis where they will run on their line. The other two cars are in storage. Much has changed since this video was taken. Both the King Dome and the Alaska Way viaduct are gone. The Victoria Clipper stopped running ferry service to Victoria, BC and is long gone. Keep a eye out for the old railroad tracks leading to the piers as well as some old tracks that original went under the viaduct. Downtown Pioneer Square is unchanged, and luckily both Milwaukee Road and Northern Pacific train stations survived.
