Design Your World: A pathway to design - Imagine a Place

The lack of representation within the industry has been top of mind for some time, but a program to help change this became real as a series of dramatic global events changed our lives. If the potential of Design Your World resembles anything close to the interest and curiosity of the first class of teens in Chicago, the future of design is bright and filled with possibilities. But the challenges are real and the work ahead will require the entire industry to participate in some way. This past spring we spent time with Cheryl Durst and the amazing Design Your World team at IIDA headquarters in an unusually quiet downtown Chicago. The challenges of remote working, masks, and keeping a safe distance never deterred the team from sharing passionately about the intent, hopes, and dreams for this exciting program. "Design Your World is not just an opportunity to help these young teens discover a path in design, it's connected to something even bigger and just as important. A diverse population of designers that can truly represent this nation's people is critical for the health of the industry and for all the people of this country that are experiencing design outcomes every day." Ryan Menke, OFS, Presenting Sponsor The Design Your World program offers a well-rounded curriculum that covers topics such as material selection, color theory, creating space plans, as well as working with various types of design firms and sectors. According to IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, “The goal of the program is to demonstrate that design is accessible to all, both as a career and as a necessary component of life.” ASM has a long-standing record of success in the Chicago area, having served nearly 19,000 high school teens annually and over 350,000 since the program’s inception, with a focus on underserved communities. The partnership represents a paradigm shift in the predominantly homogenist design industry, focusing on students in the early stages of career exploration, with an aim to bring the possibilities and inspiration of a career in design within reach.
