The pathophysiology of a migraine headache is believed to be due to either release of vasoactive neuropeptides causing abnormal vasodilation, “sterile” inflammation and/or neuronal impairment. When a migraine headache is elicited, there are particular phases by which a migraine headache occurs. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors for having migraine headaches, the triggers of a migraine headache, what happens in each phase of a migraine headache, how migraines are diagnosed and how they are treated.
