In the heart of the Adriatic, lies the mysterious island of Vis. Vis is about 2.5 hours by ferry from the mainland. Just enough time for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. The island was settled over 3,000 years ago. Up until recently, Vis was a secretive military installation. Only a few people were allowed to visit. Today, its citrus groves and its vineyards are open to everyone. Vis is known for its unique grape varietal: vugava. It was once thought to be the ancestor of viognier. A 16th century Venetian tower crowns a waterfront built on a once-thriving fishing industry. Today, Komiža revolves around tourism and serves as a safe harbor for pleasure craft. Stroll through the old town then climb up to the church of Saint Nicholas. Built in the 13th century, it boasts incredible views of Komiža.
