Stanford Pediatric Grand Rounds: From Too Little to Too Much Medical Care: The Spectrum of Medical Neglect to Medical Child Abuse Presented By: Melissa Egge, MD Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Session Description This session will cover the spectrum of the harm that may come to a child who is the recipient of too much or too little medical care. Formerly known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, the phrase “Medical Child Abuse” focuses on the harm to the child rather than the pathology of the caregiver. It is important to report suspected cases to child protective services for investigation, and this session will review how a medical provider may recognize and manage these situations. Education Goals Recognize potential medical child abuse and medical neglect Understand options for managing medical child abuse List examples of parent, child and physician factors contributing to medical neglect Understand when and how to report suspected medical neglect and MCA to CPS
