However, there are good reasons why this is a bad idea. While it's possible to get moisture back into Boveda salt crystals, it's not the same as how they're humidified at Boveda. Carefully-controlled pressure and temperature conditions are used to ensure three things: 1. The salt granules are the correct size to release moisture at a precise predetermined rate. 2. The salt crystals are the correct shape so that they don't puncture or abrade the pack's inner membrane. This is in order to prevent leaking. 3. The salt is saturated to a point that guarantees a certain lifespan for the pack. The crystals have enough moisture to last, but little enough so they don't stick together and affect moisture release rate. DIY "recharging methods," on the other hand, take a spent Boveda pack filled with already fused-together crystals. By the time a Boveda pack is finished, its salt is already starting to form into jagged, sharp-edged crystals. Not only will these large crystals release moisture at an unpredictable rate, they can damage the pack's inner film. This can, in turn, lead to "weeping," where liquefied salt solution leaks onto your expensive cigars and humidor! Also, recharging a Boveda pack at room temperature and air pressure means you won't be able to get enough moisture in without the salt liquefying. Therefore, you'll get less than 3 months per pack, rather than 6-12 months. Most likely, if you recharge packs, you won't know the exact mass of moisture added to the pack, nor the moisture release rate. This means the Boveda two-way system simply doesn't work on recharge. The reason you might want to recharge Boveda packs is probably the price of new packs. However, even if you're using 4 Boveda packs in a 50-cigar wood humidor, that's $16 for 6-9 months of humidification. Meanwhile, your cigars are probably up to 20-30 dollars a piece. Also, if you're looking for value, consider using airtight containers, especially for long-term storage. Ultimately, the point of Boveda packs is ease of humidification: take a new pack, put it inside and close the lid. To summarize: 1. Boveda packs are cheap compared to cigars. 2. Recharging runs the risk of Boveda packs leaking on cigars and wood humidors. 3. A recharged pack is unpredictable in terms of longevity and moisture release. Finally, if your Boveda packs are lasting much shorter than expected, it's probably an issue with your storage solution. Incorrect seasoning for a humidor, for example, or ineffective seals.
