Dr Richard Wood presents his current work on Autistic-Coded Representation in Horror. This research talk was presented at Northumbria University on 11th February 2026, in conjunction with the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS), who supported the talk via their New Connections scheme. #horrorNU Autistic-coded characters have existed in film throughout its history, regardless of whether their creators intended to create autistic-coded characters. Using the visual representation of the autistic spectrum provided by Kahle, this lecture identifies characters in horror who present as autistic-coded and considers how they are portrayed within the context of horror. The talk draws on Robin Wood’s theoretical framework of The Other and its absorption of repression of unwanted traits in society to consider the paradoxical nature of neurodivergent identification; how horror’s large neurodivergent fan base may identify with The Other, whose experience often reflects their own othering, whilst at the same time witnessing their own traits being reflected as monstrous. Dr Richard Wood is a horror author and academic. Having written over forty horror novels, he’s maintained a successful career writing and marketing his own books, and has been able to share this experience and expertise with students. He has a PhD entitled Demonic Horror and its Reflection of Society, and is currently researching how horror reflects societal attitudes and represent those considered to be The Other.
