Ellian rises from her bed and opens the door of the old cast-iron stove. She tosses a piece of dry firewood onto the embers that faded overnight. "Crack." With the sound of burning wood, the air in the room turns warm again. She boils water, and holding a steaming mug, sinks deep into the leather sofa. This is a world without electricity, internet, or human noise. The only sounds are the blizzard beating against the window and the crackling of the stove. Some might call this scenery despair. But Ellian, adjusting the wick of the lamp on her desk, thinks to herself. At least for today, she is warm and safe. When darkness falls, she will burrow back into her thick blankets.
