In a time between Frogstomp and Freak Show, Silverchair returned to LA to play the Palladium dance hall at the famous intersection of Sunset & Vine. I was there ;) 25 years later, it came to my attention that a radio production crew was also there, and a "pre-FM" tape of the show was circulating - a digital tape, so fortunately, the re-synchronization was not too difficult! I think this is a fantastic upgrade over my original sound, and you will enjoy it too ;) More technical details follow this timeline, courtesy Leanniette on my original posting: 0:00 title card 0:52 Leave Me Out 3:38 Slave 7:36 Findaway 11:10 Freak 15:06 Acid Rain 18:40 Suicidal Dream 22:22 Tomorrow 27:18 Madman (first attempt) 28:57 *Ben's drums cause a kerfuffle, girls scream 30:15 *Daniel sits down to have some water (very hard to drink), girls scream more 30:40 *Ben whips his drums back into shape, Dan goofs around, girls have lungs of steel 31:55 Madman (success - "for the radio") 34:40 *Daniel elaborates on the preceding interval, which no one heard on the radio 35:17 Learn To Hate 40:22 Faultline 45:21 Pure Massacre 51:01 Nobody Came 57:53 Israel's Son (interrupted) 1:02:46 *another kerfuffle 1:05:55 Surfin' Bird ABOUT THE COLOR Much of the "look" of this video is rather bizarre, and people have asked: "Did you add color effects, and can you please turn them off?" The answer is, no I didn't, so I can't! In fact, no digital (or analog) color effects were used on this video. All of the colors in this video comes from the stage lights, and how the camera sensor interpreted the stage lights. Specifically, the camera was sometimes saturated, or "over exposed," producing solid colors (or near-white), where the human eye would see more detail. But also, the stage lighting is designed to be seen from a distance - so in close-up, you're not seeing all the colors and it can seem washed in one or two odd colors. (Note that I did occasionally used a digital "light-amplification" effect, which also causes motion blur, mostly on pit views, and also the digital doubler, which seems to amplify the sensor issues). ABOUT THE SHAPE This video was originally shot in 4:3, and normally, I would never stretch or crop a video to pander to a modern shape, pleasant as the 16:9 frame can be! But quite by accident, I saw some of this video stretched to 16:9, and I was like: "WOW! For the first time, this video actually looks right!" Because if you've seen the original video, you know that the kick drum in the middle of the frame, has always been a vertically-squeezed oval. Not that they didn't make kick-drums in this shape, but it certainly wasn't common ;) Suddenly, after adding a horizontal stretch to the picture, the kick drum appears round; the bass cabinets on the right appear square, and Daniel's proportions are closer to a human being! It's not perfect (check the diagonal formed by his guitar neck and body), but I think this stretched version really is closer to the correct look. How is this possible? The Canon A1D camera simply didn't have an anamorphic or widescreen feature. Here's what I think happened: I taped this show from a side balcony, so my shooting position was pretty-far off from directly in front of the band - perhaps as much as 45 degrees off-center. Since the camera never moves, the angle error is constant. And this error causes a "natural squeeze" which actually is very similar to the squeeze from an anamorphic lens! I've never read this technique in "American Cinematographer," but it seems to be a real thing; this video is proof! ABOUT THE AUDIO The pre-FM audio is a huge improvement over the original sound, but unfortunately, some of the dead time - and all of the mistakes - were cut from the FM broadcast. For these sections of the tape, "the sync guy" reverted to the original camera audio. It's unfortunate that the first - and best - version of "Madman" has the inferior audio, but it does give you an idea of how it sounded "with the screaming girls." Be patient, and you will then hear "Madman" with with the pro audio. Speaking of... I think "Madman" is about Ozzy... what do you think? --Gary Davis, October 2021 Sync by Kingbean, facilitated by Shayne Stacy/Sacramento music archive. Pre-FM tape from Tapeworm(48). thanks to all!
