Steam returned to the London, Tilbury and Southend line on the 2nd and 3rd of May 1999 with two round trips on each day between London Fenchurch Street and Shoeburyness. With busy commuter traffic and length of less than forty miles, tank engines were used to work the line until electrification in 1962. The video opens with my painting of LT&SR 66 'Earls Court' at Fenchurch Street in 1910, followed by a photo of '2500' class, built by the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1934 exclusively for the route. The tank engine tradition continued into British Railways days, with BR standard 4 types becoming more common during the 1950s and early 60s. It is this era that was recreated in 1999, although passengers had the comforts of main line coaches, rather than the crowded commuter trains normally seen. Standard 4 tanks 80079 and 80098 worked on the line in the 50s, and were restored from scrapyard condition, 80098 having re-entered traffic ten months before the date of the LTS runs, and 80079 is seen in it's last six months of main line activity. The video was captured by my brother and myself over two days, and is edited to represent one day's action. Cameras: Akai PV-C40, VHS-C, mono linear sound (with a bit of channel tinkering in the edit!) Microphones: Sennheiser MKE 300.
