In this episode, I will cover The Basics of Getting Offline. This is one of the most fundamental skills taught in Warrior Flow Combatives. Let's face it: in order to be struck, you have to be available to the strike, yet all too often in martial arts training, people are taught to block first and then counterstrike. However, this way of thinking misses the most salient point: if you have time to block a strike, then it means you not only know where the arm is but also the direction and speed of the strike as it approaches. Well, if you know that, generally, you also have enough time to move out of the way. The point here is that there are several ways to deal with a strike: you can block it, redirect it, or avoid it. The choice people usually make is to block it because it is the prevailing paradigm of how you must respond, especially to a “haymaker.” However, this is also the most difficult to accomplish. It's not impossible, just more difficult. However, the one you want to choose is to get offline. By getting offline, you give yourself the best chance to enter where you choose, throwing off their timing and ending the fight. The reason is that regardless of the choice you make, it will take you the same amount of time to respond. Check it out! Enjoy.
