Learn about the Penobscot River Paddling Trail, which comprises a series of free, public campsites from Medway to Penobscot Bay! While the upper portion of Maine’s Penobscot River is justly famous for its crashing whitewater rapids, most of its mid and lower sections are wide and lazy—perfect for a relaxed canoe or kayak trip. Making it easier for the paddling public to experience a multi-day excursion on this scenic waterway is the Penobscot River Paddling Trail, founded by David Thanhauser and Cloe Chunn. The couple, along with numerous volunteers and support from various landowners, have created a series of free public campsites extending from Medway, at the junction of the Penobscot’s East and West Branches, all the way to Penobscot Bay, where it joins the Maine Island Trail. This short film features a sample of the trail on a paddle with Tanhauser and Chunn, starting at the Costigan Boat Launch in the town of Milford and ending with an overnight stay at the Ketawamkihtek campsite just above Old Town. Note that leaving a vehicle overnight at the Costigan ramp parking lot is not allowed without permission from the local sheriff's office. The PRPT can offer advice on overnight and long-term parking options along the trail.
