Perfectly situated at the foot of Mt. Washington we stayed at The Glen House. 15 minutes closer than the next closest lodging, it has an interesting history as does the mountain itself. And while we may have had some complications with the onsite restaurant, the views of the Presidential Mountain Range from the spacious deck were amazing. There was some casual hiking by the property also – just, keep your eyes open for ‘one with nature’ types lurking under the bridge. That was…interesting! But we were here to hike Mt. Washington, the highest mountain in the Northeast, at 6288 feet! The planned hike, starting at the Huntington Ravine Trail, taking Tuckerman Ravine and looping back by Lion Head, would have been about 5 miles with a 2400-foot elevation gain. Reassessing our time with some other things we wanted to do, as we only had one day, we took the Alpine Garden shortcut. Specially built in 1869 to climb the mountain, there is the Cog Railroad that also goes to the peak. We didn’t see it running on this day. From the peak you have pretty much an unimpeded view for miles in every direction including all the way to Canada…unless, of course, you have overcast or low clouds, which apparently happens quite frequently. But, we had a beautiful day – we were prepared to be cold, but it was about 70 degrees at the peak with a mild breeze – could hardly have been better a better day for hiking. The Wildcat Mountain ski resort was a constant landmark visible almost everywhere we went. If you’re an AT fan, you already know the Appalachian trail right through the area. The loose bouldery surface of much of the mountain was very odd to me. It reminded me of Rock Creek in the Rausch area of PA or the Ringing Rocks also in PA. The only foulage we encountered on the hike was in the Alpine Garden area, and it wasn’t very Gardeny. At Washington’s feet are several waterfalls. Thompson Falls, Crystal Cascade, and Glen Ellis were on our list. After a day of hiking, there was nothing left to do but sit on the deck by the fireplace with a glass of wine and watch the sunset over our presidents. Tomorrow morning, it’s off to Acadia!
