Here it is. The final design of the digital piano action that I will use in the full 88 key build. The initial design had a bunch of issues that I will cover in the video... some of which were big enough that I needed to reprint the entire framework, which essentially meant replacing every single part of the design. Around this time I also realized that my design file organization just wasnt going to work for planning out the full keyboard so I ended up having to remake the entire design in Fusion 360 from scratch. Fortunately this only took a couple days as I could straight up copy most of the sketches, but still. In the end the prototype worked out perfectly, and I even took it to a piano technician nearby to get their opinion. Their response? Quite positive! According to them the action felt better than any digital piano action they tried before and even better than some of the grand piano actions they worked on in the shop - In fact there were only 2 things they mentioned: 1. The letoff mechanism has a very distinct 'click' that you can feel when you let go of the key which isnt there in a regular grand piano. In part this is due to the difference between the traditional Erard action and the Hickman action I went with, but we also spent some time tuning the springs to minimize this feel. 2. The keys are still plastic, no matter the kind of post-processing I do on them. Nothing I can do about that unfortunately - until I find some way of making fake-ivory buttons to place on top of the keys I will have to be satisfied with the plastic keys. Well.... One more video to go before I take a bit of a break so the assembly can get caught up with the video series. Should only be a week or two - Ive actually been working on the assembly even before I posted the first video; was hoping to have the assembly more or less finished before the last video was posted, but its taking longer than expected (just the 88 keys took 74 hours and I still have the felt inserts to add before they are done), so... sorry about that. Introduction: same as 0:teaser. Project discussion forum: https://pianoclack.com/forum/d/1825-d... As before, I will just provide links to some of the other videos in this series if you are interested in watching some of the theory behind the build (and hevent seen them yet): Janko Layout (going over the key layout as compared to the classical piano, covering isomorphic layouts in general and a simplified explanation of how the Janko layout can be 'crafted' from the classical one) • DIY Janko Piano: 2. Keyboard Layout Hickman Action (going over the hammer action that I decided to go with; including its mechanics, history, and comparison to the Erard's piano action used in pretty much all grand pianos today) • DIY Janko Piano: 3.
