The CCMS Lent Term Concert 2026, which took place on the 4th February in West Road Concert Hall. Jean-Baptiste Lully: Suite from "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" Conductor: Evie Perfect Camille Saint-Saëns: Le Carnaval des Animaux Conductor: Isaac Chan Piano: Isaac Chan & Daniel Blaze Gabriel Fauré: Pavane & Cantique de Jean Racine Conductor: Will Bennet Ralph Vaughan Williams: Five Mystical Songs Conductor: Thomas Alban Soloists: Will Bennet, Eve Doyle, Izzy Theodosius, Eoin Jenkins Lully's incidental music for Molière's comédie-ballet follows the adventures of Monsieur Jourdain, a bourgeois social climber who hires musicians, dancers, and tailors in his quest for aristocratic refinement. This suite captures the wit and elegance of Louis XIV's court, from the spirited overture to the graceful airs accompanying the tailors' dances. Saint-Saëns's delightful “Grand Zoological Fantasy” parades a menagerie of creatures through fourteen musical portraits. From the regal lions to the elegant swan, graceful kangaroos to lumbering elephants, the composer combines humour with exquisite craftsmanship. Originally written as a private entertainment, Saint-Saëns forbade public performance during his lifetime, fearing it might damage his serious reputation. Fauré's wistful Pavane evokes the slow, processional court dance of Renaissance Spain. Composed for a Parisian salon concert, its nostalgic melody and gentle orchestration create an atmosphere of refined melancholy and timeless grace. Written when Fauré was just nineteen, this serene setting of Racine's hymn reveals the young composer's gift for melodic beauty and harmonic subtlety. The devotional text, a paraphrase of a Latin office hymn, inspired music of luminous spirituality. Vaughan Williams set five metaphysical poems by George Herbert in this deeply personal work that fuses English pastoral tradition with religious fervour. The songs explore themes of divine love, spiritual struggle, and mystical union, with the composer's characteristic modal harmonies creating an atmosphere both ancient and timeless.
