Bjernede Church by Sorø is a medieval round church and the only one of its kind on Zealand. There has also been a round church on the site where Pedersborg Church was later built. The current Bjernede Church was built around 1170 by Sune Ebbesen of the White family, whose father Ebbe Skjalmsen - Bishop Absalon's uncle - had built a wooden church on the site. The lower half of the church is built of granite, while the upper half is built of brick, a new material that the Danes began to use from approx. 1140-50. The porch was built around the year 1500, and while the tower was rebuilt in the 1400s, from 1890-1892 it was brought back to its original appearance by the architect H.B. Storck. Inside, the church (which Horne and Thorsager round churches are, and which Pedersborg probably has been) is supported by four large granite columns that support round-arched vaults. In the tower, there is a room that the Hvide family used as a meeting room, and unlike the Bornholm round churches, it is not provided with shards. Whether these are shotguns at all is hotly debated - you can not see anything so close to the church that you have been able to hit with a bow and arrow. Recorded with Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
