Many of you have heard me talk about Stephanie's book and what a game-changer it's been for so many readers. We talk a lot about how what happens before and after a mom dies can have just as much effect on a daughter's long-term adjustment as the loss itself. That's where Complex PTSD (aka C-PTSD) can come in. C-PTSD is still a relatively new diagnosis. It can be the result of exposure to years of ongoing stress, such as growing up in a home with mental illness, substance abuse; physical abuse; emotional abuse; sexual abuse; neglect; domestic violence; witnessing a family member struggle with terminal illness; bullying in school or at home; and more. On our recent Motherless Daughters Community Call about C-PTSD, we heard stories from many women who suspect their early experiences have caused symptoms of complex trauma. I know it helped me understand a lot about my past, and about why and how I think and behave in certain ways in the present. Stephanie shares her own story in the book, of growing up in a home with an abusive mom who left the family when she was a teen and living with an emotionally distant father afterward. Then, in her 20s as a journalist living in New York, she started having debilitating panic attacks. Her quest for relief ultimately led her to a therapist who understood the symptoms of C-PTSD. Her book details her journey and also offers a deep dive into what complex trauma is and what it does to the body, mind, and spirit.
