The Lowland Folk Four, formed in the 1960s in Dundee comprised Stewart Brown, his wife Ann Brown, his brother Ramsay Brown and friend Philip Gore. The group were well known and highly regarded, bringing the wide spectrum of their music to audiences in folk clubs and theatres and making several TV appearances on popular shows of the age, such as Hootnanny, White Heather Club and My Kinda Folk. They also released a number of popular albums and singles including an album of children’s songs called “ Eh'll Tell the Boaby”. In addition they featured on a number of compilation albums of Scottish musicians. Following more traditional careers the group semi-retired in the 70’s, but reformed in the 80’s with Allan Barty on fiddle and mandolin recording two further LP’s and two singles. The group performed on a number of occasions at the St Andrews Folk Club in Fife and the archived audio recording is thought to be from an appearance there in 1966. Lead singer Stewart Brown is also a playwright. His first play, Audience, featured David Tennant, and was toured throughout Scotland by the 7:84 theatre company. He has also written musical plays for children with touring productions in both the UK and America. A further full-length play, Toshie, was commissioned and produced by Dundee Rep in 1994 and reprised in 2003 by The Abbey Theatre Club.
