On this episode of Rave Story TV, Billy Daniel Bunter sits down with his great friend and one of the most important voices in UK breakbeat, old school and jungle radio — Jay Cunning. Jay takes us right back to 1988–89, discovering house and rave through a Frankie Bones mixtape and becoming obsessed with pirate radio, which he describes as “the internet of the time” — a secret society where music and culture were passed hand to hand. He recalls his first life-changing rave at Sterns in Worthing, plus legendary nights at Astoria and Roller Express, and explains why early ravers talked more about the experience than the DJs — something very different from today’s commercial DJ culture. Jay shares his journey into radio on Luck & Neat’s pirate station, the politics of the garage scene, and how he later landed his huge show on Kiss 100 FM, becoming the global voice of breaks. He reflects on touring the world to tens of thousands of people, his massive impact in Spain and Europe, and even causing a riot on the dancefloor. He and Bunter discuss: Why DJ Randall was far ahead of everyone in the early 90s Buying mixtapes from local markets His residency at The End with Andy C and RAM Records Moving from 1210s to CDJs, Serato and controllers — and the digital disasters along the way Working with legendary reggae band Aswad Why old school resurgence is not new Why most bootlegs of classics miss the point Why the scene needs more true underground events This is two friends speaking passionately about rave history, breakbeat culture, pirate radio, and where the scene stands today — honest, real, and rooted in the original spirit of rave. #JayCunning #BillyDanielBunter #RaveStoryTV #PirateRadio #OldSchoolRave #Breakbeat #Jungle #AcidHouse #UKRave #Sterns #Astoria #Kiss100 #RAMRecords #TheEnd #90sRave #RaveHistory #UndergroundMusic #RaveCulture #UKDanceMusic #DJInterview
