This is a really 'classic' Irish whiskey, so lets get into it! The Whistler is a relatively new Irish whiskey brand, but they have been releasing some really nice whiskeys for a few years. While their own distillery has been working away behind the scenes, they have been sourcing some very nice stock and some amazing casks to release whiskey while their own spirit matures. This is the Oloroso Sherry Cask finish blend, and it's part of their cask finish series, where they want to highlight the influence of casks on a whiskey, and really, what more classic combination for Irish whiskey is there than bourbon aged and sherry finished. This is a blended whiskey, made up of 65% Grain, and 35% malt, which was initially aged in ex-bourbon casks, before being finished for 9 months in an Oloroso Sherry Cask, it comes in at 43% and is a non-age-statement whiskey. Tasting Notes Nose: I immediately get greeted with caramel apple, citrus peel and some vanilla, but behind that is some nice oak spice and some sherry influence, with toasted walnuts, figs and raising coming through. There's not a lot of malt on the nose, with the buttery influence of the grain shining through. Palate: The palate actually has quite a nice, honeyed mouthfeel, kind of like orchard fruits, dipped in honey, which accompanies a nice hit of malt, burnt brown sugar and more of those rich sherried fruits and toasted nuts. A little bit of youthfulness shows through at the end of the palate. Finish: The finish however is nicely rounded, while it's not particularly long, there's a nice balance of sweetness and spice with the citrus note going a little lemony towards the very end. Ultimately, this whiskey is evidence of a good cask programme at the distillery. Rather than being a very simple blend, the strength of the sherry influence does help to elevate the whiskey a little bit, and means that if you want to try a classic Irish whiskey, you could do a lot worse than this! ------------------------------------------------------- I'm a total whiskey nerd and this channel is all about Whiskey, Whisky, Bourbon, Rye, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Whiskey. I'm always on the hunt for the best whiskey and love making whiskey review videos. My passion is for Irish whiskey, but I'm open to looking for the best Bourbon or the best scotch too! I'm an Irishman, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying whiskeys from all around the world, from Kentucky bourbon to Japanese single malts. I also love making cocktails, especially whiskey cocktails (or whisky cocktails) and really enjoy taking a classic recipe and adding my own twist to it, or making simple, 3 ingredient cocktails Make sure to subscribe for reviews every Wednesday and cocktail recipes every Friday! https://www.youtube.com/channel/TheWh...
