Coyote Wall area in Washington State is a prominent geological feature formed by ancient Columbia River basalt (CRB) flows. These flows, originating from eastern Oregon, flooded the area approximately 16 million years ago. The basalt subsequently underwent folding, faulting, and uplift, creating the distinctive wall-like structure visible today. When lava cools, it contracts and cracks, forming columns that are usually perpendicular to the cooling surface. However, if the cooling isn't uniform (e.g., due to water seeping into the lava or variations in the lava flow's surface), the resulting stress and contraction will be uneven, leading to curved or irregular columns. The erosive power of the Columbia River and Ice Age floods further shaped the landscape, carving out the gorge and exposing the basalt layers.
