When my mom found out she was pregnant with me, my dad just… vanished. One night, while she was asleep — he disappeared. He left her alone with all the bills… and now a baby to raise, by herself, in New York. She was completely overwhelmed. One day, while she sat outside a Starbucks silently crying, a man in a suit walked up and asked if she was okay. She explained everything, and he looked genuinely concerned. Then he asked, “Do you need a job?” It was a good opportunity — something that could’ve made her real money. And at that time, she didn’t have many other options. A few weeks later, she had an interview. She was nervous — but hopeful. Then, the night before, the power in her building went out. The next morning, her alarm never went off. She woke up late, in a panic, and rushed to the train station. She got there — and missed the train by just 30 seconds. She felt completely defeated. She called the office and asked if she could still come in later. But they told her not to bother — if she couldn’t even show up on time for the interview, she wasn’t getting the job. She was so stressed and exhausted, she just went home and cried herself to sleep. Four hours later, someone started banging on her door. She opened it to see my aunt — crying. She immediately hugged my mom, saying she’d been calling nonstop and thought something terrible had happened. Turns out… it had. The interview? It was scheduled in one of the Twin Towers. And that day — was 9/11. If the power hadn’t gone out… If she’d woken up on time… If she had caught that train… She would’ve been in that building. And neither of us would be here today.
