K+S’s Bethune Mine – How does solution mining work?

Solution mining is the process of mining underground water-soluble minerals by dissolving the minerals with water. The mineral-rich solution (so called brine) is then extracted from the ground. Finally, the brine is evaporated, and the minerals processed to e.g. potassium products. By application of this technology the new K+S’s Bethune Mine started production of potassium chloride products in mid of 2017 and supplies the markets in Asia, North and South America. The new overseas production site is an important step for K+S market development, as it enables the company to supply its international customers from two continents.
