In this video, I walk through some of the most important bookbinding fundamentals that make the difference between an amateur result and a refined, high-end handmade book. We start with the materials - paper, leather, bookcloth, thread, and other essential bookbinding supplies - and talk about how choosing better materials can dramatically improve the finished journal. I compare different paper weights, including why 120 GSM paper is one of my favorite choices for handmade journals, sketchbooks, and notebooks. From there, we move into the foundational techniques that have a major impact on the final result: folding signatures properly, punching accurate sewing holes, choosing the right needle and thread, sewing with good tension, and using small structural steps that help your covers and spine stay aligned.
