April 15, 2025 Title: EOL Seminar: Key Findings from Recent Field Campaigns Examining Environmental Ice Nucleating Particles Speaker: Russell Perkins, Colorado State University Ice nucleating particles (INPs) and a rare subset of aerosol particles that play a key role in controlling cloud state and precipitation likelihood in mixed-phase clouds found across the world. Because these particles are so rare, it is challenging to understand and predict environmental sources and concentrations of INPs, and in many cases the mechanisms leading to their emission are poorly understood. Recent field campaigns have revealed interesting features related to INP composition, emission, transport, and microphysics within clouds. Key findings will be outlined from the Cold Air Outbreak Experiment in the Sub-Arctic Region (CAESAR) and Arctic Radiation-Cloud-Aerosol-Surface Interaction EXperiment (ARCSIX) airborne research campaigns, and the ground-based Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) field campaign in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and the BioAerosols and Convective Storms (BACS) field campaigns in the Colorado High Plains.
