In this video Gudrun tells us more about her pattern, which is a recreation of a design dreamed up by her mum back in the 1970s when she started her knitwear business, The Shetland Trader. Gudrun decided to call it ‘Lizzie’ after Lizzie Laurenson, one of her parents’ neighbours, who was one of the first knitters Gudrun’s mum employed and also a bit of a grandmother figure to Gudrun’s two older siblings. There is a good chance she knit up one of these lacy pinafores! Gudrun talks us through the construction of her Lizzie Pinafore which features a Shetland lace pattern called razor shell lace, or new shell. This technique creates the prominent zig zag shape which works so well with the striping of colours.
