They Held It For 3 Months! | Samsung Note 9 Data Recovery & Motherboard Repair

This Samsung Note 9 came in for data recovery after another repair shop attempted the repair but was unable to fix it. The customer waited three months, bringing in the device and a letter sent by the other shop when they finally gave up. Upon inspecting the motherboard under the microscope, there was flux all over the board and a crooked shield. Connecting the phone to the DC power supply showed a very high current draw, indicating a short circuit. Checking the board for heat signatures using a thermal camera, I noticed the shield improperly soldered by the other shop had a pretty big hot spot under it. Upon desoldering the shield, the components were a mess—completely crooked and bridging to adjacent components. After fixing the other shop's work, the short circuit still remained. The heat was actually bleeding through from an untouched shield on the other side of the board. Measuring with a multimeter revealed an inductor with a direct short circuit to ground. The chip lit up like a Christmas tree on the thermal camera. I harvested a replacement chip from a donor board and reballed it with fresh solder. The result? The device booted fully, and the data was successfully recovered. We were able to send the customer back with their data and a fully fixed Samsung Note 9. Need Data Recovery?
