A high-sea-going training vessel of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy arrived in Hawaii in the early hours of Tuesday to start its four-day visit to the United States. At 09:00, the vessel, Zhenghe, carrying more than 300 Chinese navy cadets and officers sailed into Pearl Harbor where it was welcomed by U.S navy representatives, officials with the Chinese Embassy in the United States and overseas Chinese. The training vessel, also known as "the First Vessel of the Chinese Military Academies", hosted a reception on its deck and was opened up to the Chinese embassies and consulates in the United States, overseas Chinese and U.S. navy officers and men. The commander of Zhenghe will visit the U.S. navy Hawaii headquarters and attend a reception on guided-missile cruiser USS Chosin. Chinese navy officers and cadets will visit U.S. navy vessels, carry out exchanges on salvage and damage control training with the U.S navy forces, and compete against them in a variety of games including football, basketball and tug of war. "We do have some exchanges set up between the two ships from a planning stance. We are going to go through some search and rescue planning, show us how we do some planning to recover a man lost at sea, which is very important for any nations that operate maritime vessels. We're also going to be able to do a damage control exercise, go through, share some of our lessons learned, show the Chinese navy some of our equipment and how we do business. And hopefully learn from you as well," said Kevin Brand, commanding officer of the USS Chosin cruiser of the U.S. Pacific Command. "Navy forces are an international nation which obviously needs good communication. We should enhance mutual understanding and trust and communication," said Ye Kaihua, captain of the PLA vessel Zhenghe. The major intention of the visit is to nurture and train the new generation of seamen for the Chinese navy forces. Over half of the more than 300 crew members on the vessel are from three Chinese military academies and they have been conducting a variety of learning and practice programs while at sea, including navigation and weapons training, salvage work and medical treatment. "Now I am doing my utmost in the learning and training. My goal is to command navigation and I want to be a female captain in the future," said a cadet of the vessel. Zhenghe is also scheduled to visit South Korea on its 45-day journey. More on: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/ne...
