Swans socialising at twilight - Killingworth Lake

I was sitting by Killingworth Lake at twilight trying (and failing!) to make friends with the lone white goose there. It seems lonely. It hangs out with the Canada geese on the shore, and swims with a lone swan on the lake. I hope it gets a good partner soon. A swan came lumbering out of the lake and I offered it some food. It was shortly joined by another. I put another food container out specially for it - but it seemed more intent on eating the first swan's food. She did not object .... Soon more swans joined us and it was clear that there was a lot of bonding going on with eating the food, the preening of feathers and some gentle pecking when needed. These are mute swans - but not as mute as you might think. Their body language is rich and expressive.
